A new talent has emerged from Yorkshire under the name Jardaker, steering the conversation of the rap game towards a new genre that focuses on health topics such as our views on sustainability, philanthropy and self-care. We are often bombarded with the same distasteful themes from emerging hip-hop artists: the pursuit of wealth and the status that comes with it. But what about the broader issues that matter in the world? While raps about taking care of your mental health may not be something you can relate to, they do have something to do with the lives of people who have suffered enormous losses from the pandemic or simply the daily struggle of rising prices. In these challenging times, hearing someone wax lyrical about their country roots is refreshing.
Jardakers’ flow and delivery have a particular punch to listen to, and it’s clear that he draws inspiration from artists like Eminem. Wanting to emulate his boldness and cheeky wordplay, Jardaker transfers this to his lyrics. The Eminem songs ‘White America’ and ‘Role Model’ stand out. Both songs remind us that modern rappers perhaps do not influence younger generations as they should. “I want to get away from rappers talking about fucking bitches and making money,” he explains, “I want people to use their skills to improve the world.” After suffering from depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts for a long time, Jardaker started therapy, taking medication, meditating and keeping a journal to express himself. After about a year and a half, he began writing lyrics and learned to turn his pain into art. This self-reflection gave Jardaker the strength to move forward and opened up a new world of possibilities. He now spends most of his days going to Open Mics, recording material, working on projects and meeting many different creatives to work towards becoming a full-time rap artist.
When Jardaker is not rapping, he lives a modest life, working 9 to 5 and looking for ways to give back and maximise people’s fulfilment. He advocates vegetarianism, uses public transport and volunteers for the charity Crisis, which works to end homelessness in his area. Jardaker has been working on his Acquired Taste EP and a collaborative project with Meta.coolkids, so expect a lot from this artist in the coming months. He has no official releases yet, but you can follow him on Instagram, TikTok and Youtube at @flatcapraps to keep up to date with both releases and his musical journey.
